La historia explora una relación de cinco años entre Jamie Wellerstein, un novelista de ascenso, y Cathy Hyatt, una actriz batallando. El musical está inspirado en el matrimonio fallido de Brown con Theresa O'Neill. Ella denunció que el musical no cumplía con los acuerdos del divorcio, y Brown le denunció por interferir en su trabajo y proceso creativo.
