El musical empieza en un elaborado depósito de chatarra y se centra en los Jellicle Cats, un grupo de felinos muy peculiares. El espectáculo tiene lugar la noche del Jellicle Choice, un evento donde una vez al año los Jellicle tienen que elegir quién de ellos es más digno de ascender a la Capa Heaviside.
